Pin It Party #6

I mayyy be running on fumes [and some serious caffeine] today, but it’s a good day because my college roomie and her hubs are here! They got in late last night and will be staying with us until next Wednesday. We have so much planned over the next week from wine country [obviously] and hiking to bars and baseball. It’s going to be a ton of fun and super exhausting but I’m ready for it.

In the meantime, Lindsay is hosting another Pin It Party today so, of course, I’m playing along! If you missed the last parties, check them out!

Link Love #71

I deem this week hell week. I’ve recently started working at a new gym on top of Athleta and my existing gym. My schedule is pretty nutso but I at least made it through Monday which was the longest one. Success! There is, however, a light at the end of the tunnel. Next week, we’ll be all moved into our new place and I’ll hopefully iron out some crazy schedule kinks. Not to mention, once we move, we’ll have a whole slew of visitors! It’s going to be an exciting 6 months 🙂

What’s one of your favorite posts from the past week?

I’m grateful for…

I have to admit, while I hoped to participate fully in Elf 4 Health, it’s been really tough. I’ve been doing so much running around over the past week looking for a place to live and any downtime that I have is spent searching for more places to visit or skyping with my family. Or doing both at the same time. That said, today’s Elf 4 Health challenge is to make a list of 20 things I’m grateful for. I just couldn’t skip this one.

  1. Skype. Maybe it seems weird that this is first on my list, but since moving across the country, I couldn’t be happier to have this technology. I talk to my parents on skype a few times a day and have been able to see the rest of my family and some friends.
  2. Jilly. Speaking of skype and the rest of my family, the baby is here!! I’m sad I wasn’t able to be at the hospital with everyone but I did, at the very least, get to see the baby girl when she was just hours old. She’s such a cute little nugget and I’m so incredibly happy for my brother and sister-in-law. They couldn’t be happier and I know they’re going to be amazing parents.

    Jilly

Really, how perfectly adorable is that face?!

  3. Nathan. Obviously I’m a fan, but he’s been really great with this move. He has his job and is starting to create his routine while I’m trying to figure everything out. He couldn’t be more encouraging and supportive of me trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. Not to mention he knows how to make me smile and takes me on road trips to breweries!

Oakland Farmers Market Blue Bottle Coffee

Our first farmers’ market trip. Many more to come!

  4. My parents. To say they weren’t thrilled about the move is an understatement but they’ve been great. They put us up at their house for a few days before the move and the day after Thanksgiving, they woke up bright dark and early to take us to the airport. They have given all the support they can possibly muster up and I love em.

    3 Generations

3 generations – baby girl, daddy, and grandpa.

  5. My grandparents. I got to skype with my maternal grandparents when they were at the hospital visiting Jilly and even though everyone was totally confused as to how to hold the iPad and what to do, it was great to see them so happy with their great grandbaby. And I know my grandfather on my dad’s side couldn’t be more excited to visit the new family soon!
  6. Jessie. She’s one of my best friends and knows what it’s like to move all over the country and away from family. She knows what homesick feels like and even though I was texting her last night at 10pm, I have to remember that it was 1am for her. Her texts may have been influenced by a bit of wine, but those are the best kind, right?

Jessie Heavy Seas Ale House Baltimore Maryland MD

    Miss her.

  7. The gym. The hotel where we’re staying actually has a decent enough gym and my workouts are making me feel more normal. I like to pretend like I have some sort of routine 😉

    Hotel Fitness Center

I can only use one machine at a time anyway..

  8. FREE FOOD! Our hotel has breakfast included everyday and dinner/drinks included Monday-Thursday. Breakfast is fine.. I always have my oatmeal but Nathan is learning to deal. Dinner is.. well.. we’ve eaten it once. But they do have a decent salad bar so I’ll take it. Free is free!
  9. Whole Foods. There’s one right around the corner from Nathan’s office and I’ve been able to get a few small things to cook up quickly as well as some food from the hot bar and we’re practically living the dream over here! [I’m just happy to eat all of their roasted veggies!]

    Whole Foods Kombucha

And they have kombucha on tap!

  10. Beautiful scenery. I’ve been loving all of the views of the water and mountains as I’ve been driving through San Francisco by myself, but driving with Nathan yesterday and seeing his reactions really made it even more special.

    San Francisco California CA

The hills here are terrifying to drive!

  11. Healthy lunches. They’re everywhere in SF! I love trying all of the new places.

Evolution Fresh Kevins Kale Quinoa Butternut Squash Bowl

Evolution Fresh has a cafe here and it’s amazing!

  12. Almond milk lattes. Really, they’re just great.

    Almond Milk Latte

    The best.

  13. Chocolate and peanut butter. And marshmallow! This homemade s’mores peanut butter cup was out of this world!

S'mores Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup

I need to make these.. genius!

  14. Beer. Nathan and I took a little road trip yesterday to Lagunitas and Russian River. They both make some mighty fine beer and serve awesome food too! We split a roasted veggie pesto sandwich at Lagunitas and then a crispy crust vegan pizza at Russian River. Great way to spend a Saturday!

    Lagunitas Brewing Company Beer Sampler

    So tasty!

  15. Our king size bed. We definitely took it for granted and didn’t realize until we started sharing a queen size bed at the hotel. I can’t wait to get ours back!
  16. The rest of our furniture. I miss the cozy feeling of sitting on my own sofa. Soon enough, though. Soon enough.
  17. PayByPhone. While I don’t love having to pay for parking everywhere I go right now, it’s definitely much easier when I can just pay my meter from my phone when I’m 10 blocks away!
  18. Guest bloggers. Like I said, I’ve been slacking lately and it’s nice to have such a wonderful community to help me pick up some of the slack and keep you all happy 😉 [P.S. I have one more coming!]
  19. Social media. I love reading blogs and haven’t been reading as much lately, but as Caitlin reminded me, they’ll be there when I get back to it!
  20. You all! I’m so happy to have you reading my blog even with my lack of attention lately. Thanks for sticking around 🙂

I’d say that’s a whole lot of marvelous, huh?

What was your favorite post from last week?

Fabulous Fitness Survey

Marvelous is finding something you’re passionate about. Most recently for me, I’ve found a love for food and fitness so when I’ve seen this survey floating around the blogosphere, most recently on Tina and Julie‘s blogs, and thought it would be a fun one!

1. What did you eat for breakfast?

Well that’s kind of a silly question. I practically eat the same thing everyday!

Protein-Packed TVP Oats

2. How much water do you drink a day?

I’m usually pretty good about drinking around 12 glasses of water per day. The weekends tend to vary a bit, but I try to always carry around a water bottle when I go out.

3. What is your current favorite workout?

Best Body Bootcamp! I’m currently in my third round of BBBC and it keeps me in tip-top shape. I love that the workouts change every two weeks and they are all scalable to your level. It definitely helped me get wedding-ready and also helped me to get back to my pre-wedding shape after the honeymoon.

Tina Reale Best Body Bootcamp

4. How many calories do you eat a day?

I’ve stopped counting calories but based on what I know, I’d imagine anywhere between 1500-2000 per day.

5. What are your favorite healthy snacks?

When I’m at work, I love Greek yogurt.. the flavored kind or plain. But if I go for plain, I always add a little stevia, cinnamon, fresh fruit, and a little granola. Figs and cherries are my go-to fruits right now! I also have a slight addiction to bars. My top 3 are probably KIND Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Pecan, ThinkThin Chunky Peanut Butter bar, and LUNA Peanut Honey Pretzel. Or the Chocolate Dipped Coconut.. or have you tried the Carrot Cake bar yet?! Ha.

I also have an apple a day and if I’m home, I like to experiment with different snacks I find on Pinterest. One of my favorite finds is this No-Grain Maple Chia Cake from STUFTmama. She’s awesome 🙂

6. What do you usually eat for lunch?

Salad. Lots and lots of salad! When I’m at work I usually do what I like to refer to as a “kitchen sink” salad.. basically I throw everything but the kitchen sink into a container and call it a day! On the weekends my schedule can get a little funky if we decide to do brunch, which ends up being around 11 am. But if that’s the case, let’s say I have eggs benedict for lunch!

Salads Eggs Benedict Vegetarian Sausage

7. What is your favorite body part to strength train?

I love a good upper body workout!

8. What is your least favorite body part to strength train?

Legs or back. Let’s go with back. I had 9 vertebrae fused when I was in high school due to scoliosis, so the middle part of my back doesn’t bend at all. It definitely gets frustrating trying to do the exercises and my back muscles are probably still the weakest on my body.

9. What are your “bad” food cravings?

I guess chocolate and froyo.. but they’re both fine in moderation! I see nothing wrong with a little treat here or there. If anything, I tend to go crazy on healthy foods like fruit and granola. [And peanut butter..]

10. Do you take vitamins or supplements?

I take probiotics, but I know I should also be taking other vitamins.

11. How often do you eat out?

We typically average dinner out Friday/Saturday and lunch on the weekends. Sometimes we’ll swap a weekend breakfast for lunch, but during the week I’m really good about bringing my lunch to work and making dinner at home.

12. Do you eat fast food?

Nah, it really doesn’t appeal to me. The last time I had fast food was our first meal in Italy on the honeymoon and I’ll never let Nathan live it down! Although, it was probably my healthiest meal of the trip.. I got a salad with grilled chicken.

McDonalds Italy

13. Who is your biggest supporter?

Nathan and my parents.

14. Do you have a gym membership?

No, we’re in a condo building and I’m lucky enough to have a great gym right downstairs. The only thing I miss is having classes.. I’d love to be a spin regular 🙂

15. How many hours of sleep do you get a night?

I average around 7 hours.

16. Do you have a “cheat” day?

I don’t really plan a “cheat” day, but it often ends up happening on weekends. I usually go for the salads when I go out to eat so I can splurge on other things [cough drinks and froyo cough].

17. Do you drink alcohol?

Oh, did you miss my last What I Ate Wednesday post? 😉

Asheville North Carolina NC Wedge Pigsah Highland French Broad Brewing Chai Pani Market Place Restaurant

Brewery tours in Asheville, NC

We’re not always that crazy.. there were just too many good options!

18. Do you have a workout buddy?

Do my weights count? Haha I sometimes workout with a friend but I typically like to push through my workouts and get ’em done!

19. What is the best thing that has changed about your life since committing to a healthy lifestyle?

I just feel better in general; physically and mentally. I used to have an angry stomach but since changing how I eat, I could probably count on one hand the number of times my stomach bothers me in a year. I also love finding a good workout program. It makes me excited to get into the gym and get a good sweat!

20. What was the last healthy thing you did?

I always get my early morning workouts in, but I’m especially excited about yesterday’s run. It had been over a month since I ran so I took it slow and steady and got in 6.5 miles with a 1 mile warm up/cool down. I kept my pace slower then normal, but this is also my longest run to date! It’s only up from here 🙂

Long Weekends and Workouts

Happy Saturday! Have you entered my Chobani giveaway yet? I mean really, who wouldn’t want a free case of Greek yogurt?!

I hope you had a great 4th of July and got to see some awesome fireworks. Nathan and I met up with some friends at Gordon Biersch for dinner and drinks by the water and were able to watch the fireworks from our seats at the restaurant. Yes, it may have been through some trees, but they are city trees so they’re little 🙂

Gordon Biersch Cashew Chicken Salad

Cashew Chicken Salad

I had the day off yesterday so I took that time to sleep in [all the way until 8:30!], get in an awesome workout, and run some very important errands.

Manicure Haircut About Faces Day Spa

I was way past due to get my nails done and for a haircut! Really, it was more of a chopping.. a little shorter than I expected and prefer, but I’ll get used to it. And it’ll grow. I think I’ll need to invest in some wider headbands though because there is no way I’m going to be able to put my hair back for workouts! Any recommendations are welcome 🙂

And speaking of workouts, bootcamp this week was rough! Part of what I love about it is having the ability to scale the workouts to your own level. This week, two of the workouts concentrated on heavier weights and less reps and I really took advantage of that. My hands were red, my arms and legs were shaking, and it hurt so good. These are the workouts that give you real results [and I’m clearly proud of that.. #noshame].

Best Body Bootcamp Tina Reale

These are the workouts that helped me to get wedding ready and they’re also the workouts that keep me going back for more. The constant changes in routine and moves keep you and your muscles guessing. It also doesn’t hurt that I don’t have to think about what kind of workout I want to do each day! And I’m definitely appreciating my rest day today.

It’s so nice to still have a full weekend ahead of me. We got early and went to breakfast at one of our favorite spots right down the street, Spoons.

Spoons Cafe Federal Hill Baltimore Maryland MD Break-ing-fast Burrito

Break-ing-fast Burrito with egg whites, black bean chili, spinach, and salsa verde

We went there the day before the wedding for a little breakfast escape. It’s one of the only places where I don’t get eggs benedict for breakfast. Their homemade black bean chili has a nice kick that has just the right amount of spice. I totally converted Nathan too.. he got the same breakfast with added chorizo. Good thing we’re so different, right?

I’m sure we’ll be running around the rest of the day today and tomorrow morning we’ll be up early again to grab some fresh fruits and veggies from the farmers’ market. My fave! Enjoy your weekend!

What kind of workouts are your favorite? Are you a gym rat or do you prefer running or playing sports?

Do you have any fun plans this weekend?
