What I Ate Wednesday #111: 24 Hours in San Francisco

Have you entered my WIN Detergent giveaway yet?

If you had 24 hours [or maybe just a little more] in a city, how would you explore? Or on the other side, how would you show someone around? I mentioned the other day that my friend, Jordan, was visiting over the weekend for work. We had Friday evening as well as all day Saturday to take him out and show him the city. He’d never been to San Francisco before so Nathan and I had our work cut out for us! No problem though; we let our taste buds lead the way.

[Friday Night]
Thirsty Bear Brewing Company
First stop was for beer at Thirsty Bear. Nathan and I had been before but it had also been a few years since. Let’s just say next time, we’ll pass.

Moscow Mule
We more than made up for that with our Moscow Mule pitcher from B Restaurant. Jordan said it might have been the best cocktail he’s ever had!

Fresh Roll Vietnamese Chicken Salad
After some strong drinks, Fresh Roll was the perfect dinner. It’s like a Chipotle-style Vietnamese restaurant and it was delish!

[Saturday]
We started our day at 10 a.m. for a dim sum brunch at Yank Sing in the Financial District.

From there, we stopped at Tout Sweet in Union Square. That was one of Jordan’s only requests, and it just so happens the owner and winner of Top Chef Just Desserts was doing a demo and book signing that day! We made a second stop back there in the afternoon to say hi πŸ˜‰

Tout Sweet Raspberry Peanut Butter Macaron

Tout Sweet Yigit Pura

Jordan & Yigit

They’re famous for their macarons and having been disappointed when we bought the real deal in Paris on our honeymoon, Nathan and I had our doubts. These macarons, however, were fabulous! I may have to get more if we go back again.

After sweets, we trekked over to the Mission for a beer..
Monks Kettle Rye Saison

.. a few relaxing minutes at Dolores Park..

.. and our final stop in the Mission, El Farolito for some amazing Mexican!

El Farolito Pork Al Pastor

The biggest plate of al pastor and beans I’ve ever seen! And demolished πŸ˜‰

We waddled out of there and hopped onto a train and then a bus and into the Fisherman’s Wharf area all to see the beautiful bridge.
Golden Gate Bridge San Francisco

We finished our night in North Beach with a proscuitto and parmesan pizza from our favorite place, Il Casaro.

Il Casaro Proscuitto Pizza

Best Italian-style pizza since Italy!

It was a long, fun, and very filling day and I’m glad we were able to show Jordan so many areas of the city and our favorite spots to eat in such a short period of time. So…… who’s visiting next?! πŸ˜‰

Sometimes You Just Need to Rest

Hi friends, happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and didn’t have too hard of a time staying awake during that rousing game last night. I also hope you’re not a Broncos fan.. eesh! Sorry about that..

We didn’t have much planned for the weekend, but ended up really relaxing. Friday I went to another awesome yoga session with the SweatGuru team.

Nathan and I went out for dinner and drinks. And despite the fact that I mentioned feeling “off”, I thought it was a good idea to have a couple beers with my smoked bbq tofu sandwich. Which was awesome.

Ben and Nicks Smoked Tofu Burger Avocado

They LOADED that bad boy up with avocado! Part of it fell off the other side πŸ˜‰

Fast forward to Saturday morning, 4:30 am I decided I should be nice to Nathan and lay down on the sofa instead of continuing to toss and turn. Turns out that “off” feeling I had Friday night was me getting sick. Go figure. Luckily I had a rest day planned already but with my morning starting as early as it did, breakfast came at a whopping 6:45! Oats, of course. And coffee.. LOTS of coffee.

Banana Raisin Oatmeal Quinoa Granola

My fave.

A couple hours later, I saw a tweet from Nicole with this recipe. Holy cannoli I needed that in my life! I had to sub some ingredients, but it ended up being a darn tasty snack.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Chia Pudding

And looking a lot like my breakfast.

Lunch time rolled around and Nathan had been dying to try the famous fried chicken sandwich from Bakesale Betty. I opted for a salad from The Mixing Bowl and I would definitely go back! Nathan, on the other hand, felt differently about his sandwich. Unfortunately it wasn’t a hit for him.

The salad didn’t come with kabocha squash. I just saw it elsewhere on the menu.

My weekend excitement kind of ended there going out, but luckily the good food didn’t end. The rest of Saturday and pretty much all day Sunday was spent on my butt trying to beat this cold. Or flu. Or whatever it is. At least I got some fresh air on Saturday though!

We did make our pizza and wings for the game yesterday and it was awesome! The naan pizza worked out great and the wings were incredible. You’ve never seen such clean chicken bones.. the meat literally fell right off the bone. We demolished a good 2 lbs.. whoops! Haha can you blame us?

Korean BBQ Baked Chicken Wings

These wings could be famous. Seriously.

By last night I was feeling a lot better and I’m hoping that all that rest really helped me kick it. Two days off from workouts and I’m ready to kill it at the gym.

What I Ate Wednesday #52: Another Birthday

Oh hi there, friends! It’s been a while, huh? Sorry about that.. life has been crazy the past couple weeks and I’ve been gathering all of the pieces.

Speaking of crazy, I can’t believe it’s already September! Here I am with my birthday edition of WIAW and it’s only 2 weeks late πŸ˜‰ I happened to have found myself in Florida on my birthday and even though we already had plans at home,Β  we quickly adapted and I had quite a tasty day. Not to mention, I was also with a bunch of family that I don’t often get to see; it was so nice to spend the day with everyone!

First and foremost, I want to wish a HUGE congrats to Jenn and her husband on the birth of their baby girl! So happy for you two three!

Birthday Lunch with the Fam!
Last time Nathan and I were in Florida, just a month earlier, we found a fabulous Vietnamese restaurant. This time, we wanted to try out another place to compare, so we dragged my family. How could they say no? It was my birthday! πŸ™‚

It was pretty entertaining watching everyone, including my Grandpa, trying to figure out the menu. Good thing there are always descriptions in English and lots of pictures!

I just can’t get behind pho in the summer so my go-to has been the grilled pork vermicelli bowl. This pork was more of a sausage as opposed to the flat, grilled pork. It wasn’t my favorite vermicelli bowl, but it was still darn tasty! And of course I asked for extra crushed peanuts!

Snack Time!
After lunch, we dragged the youngins [otherwise known as the cousins and my parents] over to one of our new favorite breweries in Florida, Funky Buddha. I got a Cucumber Jones, a cucumber and basil infused wheat ale. I absolutely loved it! It was so refreshed and delicious.. I just wish I could get more of it!

Dinner
In the spirit of trying new restaurants, Nathan took me to a tiny Indian restaurant that seats about 10 people. It was a very “no frills” kind of restaurant; they even served the food in to-go containers. Works for us!

I went for the grilled tandoori chicken and Nathan, who was feeling something extra spicy, ordered the chicken vindaloo. When you order, they ask you to give a rating, 1 though 10, for how spicy you want your sauce. He ordered a 7 and it was definitely up there!

The food was so flavorful and the portions were very generous. We will definitely be returning!

Birthday Dessert
FROYOOOOOOOOO!! Seriously, it’s all I wanted. We located the nearest Yogurtland and I absolutely loaded up! It was perfect.

And to top it all off, I ended my trip with a run [in exhausting humidity] with this view.
