Lordy, how is it already Wednesday? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining that we’re already halfway to the weekend! Today is a long one for me; I’ll be opening Athleta at 9 a.m. and closing the gym at 9 p.m. But at least I have an hour break in between, right? Silver lining, my friend. And a silver lining for you is another giveaway today! Lets get to it, shall we?

[Pre-Workout]
Chocolate Berry Super Power Bites | Barr & Table
Super power bites save the day! You should really make them if you haven’t yet.

[Breakfast]
Oatmeal Protein Egg White Oats Almond Coconut Peanut Butter Coffee Califia Farms Milk
Standard oatmeal, nut butters, and iced coffee. It totally gets me through my workouts 😉

[Snack Time]
Balance Caramel Nut Blast
I was in serious need of a snack at work and luckily I never leave home without a bar. A caramel nut blast Balance Bar held me over until I got home. Unfortunately, I had to go to the store before I could have lunch so I threw some yogurt, chocolate peanut butter protein powder, and peanuts into a bowl. Deeelish!

[Lunch]
Vietnamese Pork Bowl Salad Broccoli Avocado Sriracha
FINALLY lunch time! We’re still going through the pork and it made another awesome salad!

[Afternoon Snack]
MealEnders Signaling Lozenge
I got some awesome strawberries from the store so I grabbed a couple of those to snack on and followed it up with a MealEnders Lozenge. Taken directly from their website..

MealEnders Signaling Lozenges are a weight management product designed to help people avoid overeating and master portion control by clearing cravings from the mouth and mind. Each Signaling Lozenge consists of two flavorful layers, each playing a strategic role in weight loss. The sweet, outer coating provides a measured dose of “dessert”, habitually associated with the end of a meal. Avoiding the “no dessert” mindset prevents a sense of deprivation, which can thwart even the most earnest weight loss efforts. The tingling/cooling inner layer engages the trigeminal nerve, clears the palate and creates a 20-minute eating pause, enabling the brain to recognize the body’s natural transition from hungry to full. By the time the MealEnders experience is finished, the body’s natural signaling process of satiation has begun. With repeated use, users accept MealEnders’ sensations as a cue to stop eating, resulting in sustainable and healthy eating habits.

Sound interesting? When I first was presented the opportunity to review them, I was a bit skeptical. That said, I’m a big fan of the post-meal mint because I feel like it helps curb my sweet tooth, so why not give them a shot? First things first, the flavors are delicious! If I’m craving chocolate, I’ll reach for a Chocolate Mint or Mocha. The Mocha and Citrus are definitely my favorites, though. Once you get through the initial sweet layer, the extra tingly lozenge inside acts as my mint. I’ve definitely noticed that these little guys have helped to curb my sweet tooth after meals!

Want to give them a try for yourself? Click here to enter my giveaway!

Don’t worry if your name isn’t chosen. MealEnders wants to put an end to overeating and believes the more people its 15-calorie signaling lozenges can help, the better! So for two weeks, all “runners up” for the giveaway will be able to buy MealEnders at 30% off. Just enter coupon code WINNER-TOO at checkout. To place your order and learn more about the product, visit www.mealenders.com.

Giveaway Update:
Due to popular demand, the Chocolate Mint flavor is currently on back order. Because MealEnders wants to be sure to deliver the products as promised, the giveaway prize will be set to go out around mid-April when Chocolate Mint is back in stock.

[Dinner]
Crunchy Buffalo Chicken Roasted Ranch Potatoes Brussels Sprouts
Buffalo chicken is always a favorite in this house, so crunchy buffalo chicken is even better! And then adding roasted potatoes and brussels? We were quite happy.

[Evening Snack]
Apple + dark chocolate covered salted cashews = happy tummy.

Foodie Friday: Protein Peanut Butter Cups with TastyWHEY

A few weeks ago I received an awesome shipment from Adaptogen. They must know me because I didn’t even choose my protein powder flavor and they sent me Chocolate Peanut Butter. How perfect!

I’m always on the lookout for a delicious protein powder that’s good, not only mixed in a smoothie, but simply mixed with water or almond milk too. The name, TastyWHEY, hinted that it would be meeting my requirements and I couldn’t wait to give it a try. Ironically enough, I had an afternoon workout planned that day, as opposed to my normal morning routine, so I scooped it into my new blender bottle immediately after with some coconut almond milk. It was so creamy and tasted like a peanut butter cup! It was nice and smooth too; there’s nothing worse than a gritty protein shake, am I right?

At 160 calories per scoop, this protein powder is a bit higher than what I normally use but the ingredients more than make up for it. TastyWHEY uses a proprietary combination of exceptionally high quality whey protein, along with MCT’s [want to learn more about MCT oil?], low glycemic index carbohydrates, and micronutrients that make the awesome taste that much better. Knowing that what I’m eating or drinking is made from high-quality ingredients has become so much more important to me in the past few years. There’s no doubt that the quality of ingredients has greatly impacted my health and the way I feel on a daily basis.

Back to the taste, though. I couldn’t help but make myself some peanut butter cups. It only seemed appropriate with the flavor I received!

Protein Peanut Butter Cups

Makes 3 Cups

Ingredients
– 1 tbsp coconut oil
– 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
– 1 tbsp Adaptogen TastyWHEY Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Powder
– 1/2 tbsp cocoa powder
– 1 1/2 tsp peanut butter; divided

Directions
In a small bowl, microwave the coconut oil and maple syrup for 15-20 seconds until liquid. Mix in the protein powder and cocoa powder until smooth. Spoon 1 tsp of the mixture into 3 mini cupcake tins and place in the freezer for 5 minutes until hard.

Once the chocolate mixture has hardened, spoon 1/2 tsp of peanut butter to the center of each cup and cover with the remainder of the chocolate mixture. Place the cups back in the freezer to set. Once set, carefully remove from the cupcake tin with a knife and devour. Or store in the freezer.. your choice 😉

Put Some New Shoes On

Time to check in! Last week I asked you all if you’d commit to 30 minutes of fitness each day; did you get it in? My week looked a little something like this:

  • Monday: 45 mins cardio + an old Best Body Bootcamp circuit
  • Tuesday: 4 bursts of 10 – 15 min workouts throughout the day
  • Wednesday: 30 mins cardio + an old Best Body Bootcamp circuit
  • Thursday: 30 mins cardio + quick strength & bosu fun

    ASICS GEL-Fit Sans Bosu Balance

    I need a new photographer.. 😉

  • Friday: 30 mins cardio + TIU workout
  • Saturday: 1 hour spin + 1 hour barre [<– at Truve.. it was awesome!]
  • Sunday: 30 min walk through Tilden Botanical Garden
Tilden National Park Botanical GardenTilden National Park Botanical Garden 2

I’m making the same commitment this week and I hope you will too!

For my workouts this week, I broke out my new ASICS GEL-Fit Sana shoes. It’s funny; I’ve been putting these shoes on the mannequins at work for months now and would check the sizes to see if they’d fit me. When I got the opportunity to review the shoes from a FitFluential campaign, I was pretty excited. They’re super light and flexible; the shoe actually adapts and supports your foot with the inner lining  from the heel to the forefoot, while providing a barefoot-like sensation. I’ve never had a shoe like this before but I’m a fan.

ASICS GEL-Fit Sans Bosu

Plus, they match my bosu perfectly! [No really.. I need a new photographer.]

I also love the versatility of these shoes. I wore them multiple times at the gym and then again when we went for our walk outside. I get the need for sport-specific shoes, but with limited apartment space, I’m a huge fan of multi-purpose! Plus [a big plus!], the GEL-Fit Sana shoes are just $80 and come in 6 different colors so you can choose if you want to go bold or keep it subtle.

Now on the commitment end of things, I’m also keeping up with my meal planning; personally I just feel better when I eat better and I’m sure you do too.

Weekly Meal Plan

Sunday – Flank steak lettuce-wrapped tacos with peppers, onion, corn, & avocado
MondayOne-pot paprika chicken thighs
TuesdaySweet, sticky garlic hoisin chicken with roasted broccoli
Wednesday30-minute healthy kickin’ cajun chicken and rice
Thursday – Leftovers
Friday – Out!
Saturday – Leftovers

So now that I have my workouts and meals planned out for the week, it’s time to get my new kicks on and get moving.

Five Things Friday + Giveaway {11/14}

Hot damn, it’s Friday! I don’t know the last time I was this excited to see the big Fri. Yea, that’s what I’m calling it now. It’s just been one of those weeks.. you know the kind where nothing goes right? But it’s over and I’m looking forward to weekend festivities!

  1. We have a friend visiting this weekend! Ok, he’s really coming out here for work, but the point is he’s here and we get to spend time with him tonight and all day tomorrow. We have big plans for tomorrow; it’s going to be quite the indulgent day, but anytime we have someone visiting, it’s always all about the food and drink. Just ask my parents!

    Bear Republic Cheers

I’m still proud of them for holding their own with all of the drinking we had them doing 😉

  2. Speaking of my parents, the countdown till we head back to Baltimore for 2 weeks is in the single-digits! 9 more days, baby! It’s a shame I’m not at all excited.
  3. I got to skype with my nugget yesterday and as soon as we turned the cameras on, she walked across the room to get to me [alright, to get to the iPad and her Bubby, but I can pretend!] She just started walking a couple weeks ago and I can’t wait to play with her and see her run [or waddle] around.
    Jilly Bean Walking
  4. As part of a campaign with Fit Approach, I received 2 bottles of WIN Detergent. It may not sound too exciting to you, but if you’ve ever experienced the post-laundry stinky workout clothes, you should understand my excitement when I tell you that this detergent is specifically designed to remove sweat, oil, and odors from technical athletic/sports apparel. Hooray for no more stinky workout gear! Haha.
    WIN High Performance Sports Detergents
  5. Even more exciting than me getting the detergent is that they’re offering YOU the chance to win your own bottles. Click here to enter for a chance to win!
Can’t wait? You can also get $1 off your purchase by entering the code WINGIVE1 at checkout.

And with that, I’m off for a fun weekend 🙂

What I Ate Wednesday #110: Peanut Butter Marshmallow Mug Cake

A few weeks ago I received a package from Cellucor as part of a FitFluential campaign. Included in package was the Super HD, C4 Pre-Workout, Alpha Aminos, and two flavors of whey protein powder—Peanut Butter Marshmallow and Mint Chocolate Chip. I’ve tried some pre- and post-workout drinks before and enjoyed them so I was looking forward to trying a new brand.

I immediately started on the Super HD plan—twice per day, once in the morning on an empty stomach and again 5-6 hours later. Day one, I noticed a huge spike in my energy which was awesome.

[Pre-Workout]
Cellucor Super HD Peach Mango
Started Tuesday morning with a little peach mango energy. Perfect for my pre-workout drink; just the extra push I need to get through an early workout. It’s a touch on the sweet side, but I just add a little extra water and I’ve really started to enjoy it!

[Post-Workout]
Cellucor Alpha Aminos CELLUCORFIT FitFluential
When I get back from my workout, I go right for the Alpha Aminos. The watermelon is definitely very sweet and reminds me of a watermelon jolly rancher. I’m not a huge fan but I chug it pretty quickly before my breakfast so it’s not too bad 😉

[Breakfast]
Protein Oats Egg White Oatmeal Banana Cinnamon Almond Peanut Butter Coffee
Yup. It’s the oats again. I know, you’re absolutely shocked!

[Mid-Morning Snack]
Banana Butterscotch Simply Protein bar. A quick and easy bite to hold me over at work.

[Lunch]
Tuna Salad Pumpkin Avocado Sugar Snap Peas
This salad was not nice to me. It may not look so bad, but about half way through making it Monday night, the knife slipped and landed on my finger. It was definitely not my finest moment. At least I salvaged the salad and it was pretty darn tasty. My favorite part was the leftover pumpkin from dinner Monday night. Winter squash is the best!

[Afternoon Snack]
Cellucor Peanut Butter Mashmallow Whey Protein Mug Cake
After downing another round of the Super HD and letting that settle, I decided it was time for a nice, warm mug cake. The peanut butter marshmallow whey protein powder is delicious!

Peanut Butter Marshmallow Mug Cake

Ingredients
– 1 egg
– 3 tbsp almond milk
– 1 scoop Cellucor Peanut Butter Marshmallow Whey Protein
– 1/2 tsp baking powder
– 1/2 tsp cinnamon
– Pinch of salt

Directions
Mix all of the ingredients together in a greased, microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 2 minutes, top with more nut butter, and enjoy!

Nutritional Information
216 Calories / 8g Fat / 5g Carbs / 2g Fiber / 1g Sugar / 31g Protein

[Dinner]
Maple Glazed Salmon Sugar Pumpkin Asparagus
It was a leftovers night [my fave!] and I loved having the leftover maple glazed salmon and sugar pumpkin from Monday. The asparagus is good too but.. you know.. it’s asparagus. Not like they’re brussels 😉

[Evening Snack]
It started with an apple. And then we moved onto the jar of peanut butter with a spoon. Ha! No shame. At least I can usually limit myself to 1/2 – 1 tbsp at a time.. most of the time!

In all honesty, I also tried the C4 Pre-Workout Extreme drink but I was not a fan of the way that it made me feel. It almost made me too hyped and like my heart was beating super hard. Nathan has been drinking it before his workouts and while it’s also pretty sweet, he says that it does give him a nice jolt of energy to help him power through the workouts. It’s interesting that it has such a different effect on us but I’m glad he’s getting good use out of it. I’ll just keep the rest!

Gimme All the Bars!

Not the alcohol kind.. the food kind. If you know me, you know I like my bars so when I got a package last week from the Vega team and couldn’t wait to try them out.

Vega Bar Family Shot

Look at all that chocolate! Yummmm. All of their bars are plant-based, gluten-free, and non-GMO. They sent over 2 flavors of each of their 4 types of bars:

First up, I tried the Chocolate Coconut protein bar.

Vega Protein Sport Chocolate Coconut Bar

I was pretty ravenous that day and with 15g protein, it was a great snack that really held me over till dinner. This bar has 250 calories and 19g sugar; when I’m looking for a snack, I typically try to stay between 150-250 calories and under 15g sugar, so this one was at the higher end. That said, it was delicious! Lots of coconut flavor and obviously, being that it is coated in chocolate, I didn’t miss that either.

Next, I tried the Chocolate Cherry Almond energy bar. I had a couple bites before my morning workout and it was again, really tasty!

Chocolate Coconut Almond VEGA Energy Sport Bar

The energy bars are a mixture of dried fruits, nuts, rice crisps, etc. I feel like the dates and other fruits are usually sweet enough for a bar so I don’t love the added agave syrup and coconut palm sugar, but it was tasty nonetheless. I loved the mini chocolate chips throughout!

Another winner, the Dark Chocolate, Mixed Nuts & Sea Salt snack bar was crispy, crunchy, chocolatey, and just a touch salty—a pretty perfect combo, if you ask me.

Vega Snack Bar

While I really enjoyed this bar, I was disappointed that it only contains 4g protein. As with my ideal caloric value, I also like to have at least 10g protein in my snack bars; I feel like they have more staying power with a little more protein.

Finally, I dug into the Chocolate Cherry Almond one meal bar.

Vega Chocolate Cherry Almond One Bar

I liked the contrast in texture in this bar; the chewy top layer was a nice touch with the crunchiness of the crispies on the bottom. I’m not a huge fan of replacing my meals with bars, but I can see this being a good option if I’m on the run. I do, however try to get around 20g protein per meal and this bar has 12g, but in terms of the bar having 260 calories, I’d imagine this is a pretty good balance.

Overall, I could absolutely see myself buying both the energy and protein sport bars in the future and would recommend all of them. It all depends on what you’re looking for out of your bars, but they were all delish!

Sangria To Go

Glass of sangria? I wouldn’t turn it down! When Beso Del Sol contacted me about trying out their sangria-in-a-box, the answer was pretty obvious. Like I said, I don’t turn down some wine.

Beso Del Sol Sangria

Beso Del Sol Sangria is made with a Spanish Tempranillo wine blended with fruits. I love Tempranillo so that was another selling point for me. Not to mention the fun box.. it would be great to take to a party, cookout, or even to the beach.

I was psyched when I got the package in the mail last week and promptly put the box in the fridge. A couple hours later, I decided it was time for a little break.. I mean, I had to do the appropriate research for my review, right? I couldn’t put off tasting time.

Beso Del Sol Sangria Glass

Mine didn’t look this pretty.

It was a pretty solid sangria—like the description said, light and fruity—perfect for a hot summer day. It was a bit sweet for me so at first I added a splash of sparkling water. I love adding sparkling water to everything to make it a little bubbly, but to really kick it up a notch, I decided to add a splash of bourbon! Everything is better with bourbon, right? 😉

If you can pace yourself, this sangria can last up to 6 weeks in the fridge after opening. It’s also a great deal—a 3 liter box, which is the equivalent of 4 bottles of wine, will run you just $20! Like I mentioned before, it would be great to take to a party and I would definitely do just that.

Check out Beso Del Sol on Facebook and Twitter to find out where you can get a box of your own!

Disclaimer: I was provided one complimentary box of Beso Del Sol Sangria for review, but the opinions expressed are honest and all my own.

Wedding Blend Oatmeal

Have you entered my LÄRABAR giveaway yet?

A few weeks ago I was given the opportunity to review a new product from My Oatmeal through Fit Approach. Being the serious oatmeal lover that I am, I was pretty darn excited. And not only was I excited to try my own custom blend of oatmeal, I was happy to be supporting a great cause. The mission statement from their website states:

Our mission at MyOatmeal.com is simple.
We want to help our community and my fellow man. we will do this by donating gourmet oatmeal to various organizations that aid in natural disaster recovery.
We will also donate healthy oatmeal to non profit groups that make it their business to improve the lives of the people in their communities.
We will make it our priority to seek out, and support those groups and individuals that value family, community, our country our planet and our future by whatever means we have at our disposal via the MyOatmeal.com company.
Our mission is to make the world better, and encourage others to do the same.
One bag of healthy oatmeal at a time.

I couldn’t wait to jump in and start creating my custom blend. First up, you choose which size bag you want. Next you choose your oats; they have it all from instant, steel cut, gluten-free, and their signature smash blend. I opted for the signature smash blend which is a mixture of the 5 grain and steel cut oats. I figure if it’s their signature, it must be good, right?

Step 3 is where the real fun starts. Time to choose your flavors and add-ins!

MyOatmeal-CustomCheck out all of those flavors! It was so hard for me to choose, but when I saw Bananas Foster, I had to go for it. I also added in golden raisins, chipped coconut, quinoa flakes, and sliced almonds. Not exactly a traditional bananas foster, but I’m not a traditional gal. I also really liked that the nutritional information updated in real-time so anytime you check a box, the stats change.

Once you’ve chosen all of your flavorings, add-ins, etc, you get to name your blend. I named mine “Wedding Blend” since we had a bananas foster cake topper. Pretty cute, huh? 😉 Then you just sit back and wait.

MyOatmeal Custom Wedding Blend

My first oatmeal concoction was my pretty much my go-to. Except instead of adding banana into the oats, I saved it for the top. Usually, I’ll add half when I’m cooking the oats to give it some sweetness but since this was already flavored, I held off.

MyOatmeal Custom Wedding Blend Breakfast

In the bowl: custom oatmeal blend, egg whites, 1/2 sliced banana [because you can never have too much banana], homemade maple sunflower butter, homemade coconut cashew butter, The Good Bean chocolate chickpeas, and cinnamon.

The result? Delicious! I love all of the different flavors [is that rum?!] that the bananas foster gives to the oatmeal. It’s definitely a bit different from my normal oats and I would definitely go back to try more. Can you imagine peanut butter s’mores oatmeal? YES!

If you’re looking for a way to spice up your breakfast [or brinner] and support a great cause, I’d definitely recommend giving MyOatmeal a shot.

What I Ate Wednesday #78: Larabar Review, Recipe, & Giveaway!

Lately I’ve been having some fun in the kitchen experimenting with different recipes I’ve found on Pinterest and trying to use up some random ingredients in the pantry. Well, for us it’s really the coat closet acting as a pantry but hey, when you have limited space, you make things work, right? [Right.] On top of that, I’ve been in touch with LÄRABAR and was offered the chance to sample a few bars to review and do a giveaway. How could I say no?

I chose the Coconut Cream Pie, Chocolate Chip Brownie, and Chocolate Coconut Chew to review and they also threw in a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip too! Do you see a trend here? Not surprisingly, they were all fantastic. One of my favorite things about LÄRABAR is you know what you’re getting. Have you seen the ingredient list for the Coconut Cream Pie bar?

Dates, Unsweetened Coconut, Almonds, Cashews, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. And so many recipes across the internet that resembled bite-sized versions of a Larabar, I knew I wanted to try my own version of them.
