Sushi, Beer, & 70s

The countdown is seriously on now. My parents will be in town this Wednesday! Our place has really come together over the past week or so and the guest room is actually looking like a real guest room instead of a storage unit. That day bed that we got from IKEA is awesome.. it actually slides out into a king size bed! It’s quite cozy, too. [Your welcome, guests ;)]

Day Bed 2nd Bedroom

Friday we finally went out for sushi. This place is about 50 strides from our front door and has the best prices and quality around. I got a spicy scallop roll that was delicious but the star of the show for me was the salmon kama. This char-grilled salmon collar was only $5.95 and it was the bomb diggity!

Geta Sushi Salmon Kama Collar

They also have hamachi kama that I think I’ll have to get next time I go. Which is probably going to be Thursday with my parents. Woohoo!!

Sunday was a little crazy nuts for me, but that’s totally because of the Pliny the Younger release at Cato’s, right down the street from us. If you’re not familiar with Pliny the Younger, Russian River releases it once a year and only distributes limited kegs to select bars. And each bar only gets 1 keg so when it’s gone, it’s GONE!

Doors opened at 11:30 but people were lined up at before 10 a.m. when I went down to the gym to train, which just so happens to be 3 doors down from the bar. [Uh oh..] I had to work yesterday so we originally decided to skip Pliny but when I got out from training and working out at noon to see the line wasn’t too bad, we went for it. It didn’t hurt that the weather was gorgeous. I didn’t mind standing outside in the sunshine! Long story short, after waiting an hour for our tokens, we got the last ones.

Catos Ale House Pliny the Younger

I ran over to work and ended up having to run back and forth to cash in my token. Whoops! Haha πŸ™‚ It was a fun experience but now that we’ve had it, we’ll save our time for another line.

Russian River Pliny the Younger

Anyhow, that was definitely the highlight of the weekend. Coming up this week is going to be a lot of fun times with my parents. I can’t wait πŸ™‚

Weekly Meal Plan

Sunday – Roast split chicken breast with orange sesame sauce, roasted potatoes, and side salad
Orange Sesame Chicken Breast Russet Potatoes Salad
Monday – Leftover roast chicken and lemony carrot salad with mustard seeds and feta
TuesdayQuinoa crusted chicken with roasted potatoes and brussels sprouts
Wednesday – Leftover quinoa crusted chicken and Asian broccoli salad with peanut sauce
Thursday – Saturday – Out! Mom and Dad will be here πŸ™‚

Food for Thought

What’s the longest you’ve waited in line for something?

Food-bombing

Another relaxing weekend in the books which is just what was ordered. It’s going to be a crazy week starting with a 5am – noon shift today. Should be.. interesting. Ha! But fun, right? πŸ™‚ I definitely swapped my rest day for today and got my Monday workout in yesterday. I think there will be a nap happening later!

Friday we stayed close to home and tried a new-to-us Vietnamese restaurant, Monster Pho. It was great; I got their monster salad which came with grilled chicken, pork, beef, and shrimp.

Monster Pho Salad

As we were walking around after dinner, we passed a little plum tree so I got myself a little sweet treat.

Baby Plum

It wasn’t fully ripe yet so it wasn’t that tasty, but I took it so I ate it. To really cure my sweet tooth, we stopped at Fenton’s for some ice cream!

Fentons Creamery Coffee Cookie Crumble

Holy moly. The coffee cookie dream was just thatβ€”dreamy. Coffee ice cream with oreo cookie and chocolate chip cookie dough.. exactly what I was looking for! That said, I’d definitely go back to Lush instead of Fenton’s next time. Gelato is the bomb diggity.

Saturday was a pretty lazy day. We hit up the farmers’ market but unfortunately didn’t make out so well this time. The fruit was just not on point like it was last week so we passed. Dinner, however, was on point. Sliver for happy hour has an awesome dealβ€”when you get a drink, you get a sliver of pizza.

Sliver Pizza Happy Hour

So that’s what we did. And then I did that again. Plus more pizza and salad πŸ˜‰ I’m not usually a huge pizza girl but I was really feeling it!

Yesterday we did quite a bit of running aroundβ€”a couple grocery stores, lunch, and of course a little strolling. We went to Pappy’s in Berkeley for lunch. It’s a bar right near the college but the menu looked pretty good and they have a good beer selection. Plus we could go to watch some baseball and World Cup. I heard the salads were good, but I wasn’t expecting this!

Pappys Berkeley Tofu Chef Harvest Salad Cornbread

I really should have put my hand in there for size reference. The bowl had to have been a foot wide and a few inches deep and it was filled to the gills with a few greens, edamame, craisins, wheat berries, corn,Β tons of tofu and then some, and topped off with a huge piece of homemade cornbread! I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever had such a huge salad and it was delicious. Not to mention it was only $8 which is a steal.

You bet your butt I finished that salad and Nathan helped me polish off a pretty good portion of the cornbread. I’d say we had a little too much though because dinner didn’t roll around till 9. Whoops! It was pretty awesome though and I don’t plan on buying caesar dressing again any time soon.

How Sweet It Is Beer Glazed Citrus Chicken Roasted Corn Caesar Salad

I also made croutons from my dense-as-the-dickens sourdough loaf. At least it works for something!

What I Ate Wednesday #83: Elimination Diet

I was really trying to think of Passover as an elimination diet this time around. I had recently been experiencing itchy hands and feet, mostly at the end of the day, and was seriously hoping it wasn’t a food allergy. I didn’t think about it so much throughout the week, but I have to admit I definitely noticed a difference by the end of last night after I officially broke Passover.

Breakfast
Egg Sweet Potato Banana Scramble Justins Almond Butter Coconut Coffee
While I thoroughly enjoyed my egg white, banana, sweet potato/kabocha scramble all week, I’m excited to be having something new for breakfast. Like oats! Gimme grains! Also, peanut butter forever.

Snack
Larabar Lemon Bar
I had a bunch of errands to run in the late morning/early afternoon and stuck this bar in my purse as I was running out. Larabar was pretty much the only bar I had that I could eat during Passover.. good thing they’re so delicious!

Lunch
Avocado Salmon Salad
I was pretty hungry by the time I got home and just picked up a can of salmon from Trader Joe’s. Instead of eating it straight from the can, I whipped up an awesome salad. Also, I totally bought some cottage cheese after seeing it all over tons of blogs! Well done, FitFluential πŸ˜‰

Ingredients
– 1 can wild Alaskan salmon; drained
– 1 small avocado
– 1/4 cup cottage cheese
– 1 tsp McCormick Smokehouse Maple seasoning

Mash it all up together in a bowl and throw it on a salad, crackers, etc. I sprinkled a little chili powder on top and ended up going back for more. So good! It makes 2-3 servings [2 if you’re me!]

BREAKING PASSOVER!
Buttered Noodles

Banana Bread Granola Bite
When Nathan got home, he had a quick snack of some leftover buttered noodles from the other night. He offered me a bite and with that, Passover was officially over. Of course, then I went and grabbed a bite of granola because I couldn’t wait until after dinner.

Dinner
Chipotle Chicken Burrito Rice Bowl Avocado Black Beans Salsa
Chipotle ain’t got nothin’ on me! The salsa turned out great and I thoroughly enjoyed the rice-y bean-y goodness. Unlike any kind of elimination diet, I eliminated food for a week and immediately added all of it back into my diet in one fell swoop! Unfortunately, I was bloated within 30 minutes and now I’m not sure what did it but I’m thinking my body might hate legumes. Say it isn’t so!

Snack
Sheila Gs Brownie Brittle Peanut Butter

I won a giveaway of Shelia G’s Brownie Brittle and of course it came in the other day. Nathan tried it right away and I couldn’t wait to try a piece. And then another piece with peanut butter because everything is better with peanut butter! .. and of course I had to have my apple, a little more granola, and a handful of peanut butter puffins. Success.

So the final results? Everything may be better with peanut butter, but I’m not so sure my body is. I hadn’t experienced the bloating all week like I did after dinner and I also noticed my hands and feet getting itchy again later on. It may be time to call the doctor in on this one!

Beer is Kosher for Passover

Well that was a fun weekend! I hope you all had a great Easter if you celebrate. I continued my Passover.. celebrations? Sort of.. I just couldn’t go to Mikkeller and not get beer. Ha! At least I haven’t had bread and grains, right?

When I was little, I was telling my family what I had for lunch at school during Passover and mentioned that I had onion rings but only ate the outside. My older brother was pleased to point out that I only ate the breading. I still get made fun of! Passover officially ends Tuesday at sundown so I’ll continue to keep the spirit until then.

Anywho, Friday night we went into San Francisco and met up with a couple Fit Approach-ers at Mikkeller before heading over a sketch comedy show. It was our first time heading into the city at night and we made it taking public transportation and all. Win! I was really bad about taking any pictures that night though.. whoops.

Saturday I had plans with Alyse to go to a new VinBata class and somehow [after a couple drinks] Friday night she convinced me to go to the UrbanKick class before that. I’m so glad I went because they were both so fun! I’m not used to taking classes having a gym in my apartment complex so it was a really fun change of pace.

UrbanKick was a full hour of nonstop moving.. think Zumba with a kickboxing twist. Loved it! VinBata was really great too; it started with a few minutes of yoga warmup, then into about 25ish minutes of tabata training, and ended with 25ish minutes of vinyasa. I was completely squatted out after UrbanKick so the tabata part was rough but it was really nice to end with some good stretching.

Nathan and I were both beat Saturday night so we just stayed local and tried a new pizza joint. Luckily for me, most of the pizza places also have other great options on the menu so I got a really good salmon fix.

Pizza Moda Salmon Quinoa Swiss Chard

Yesterday was a lazy day. I had the idea of going hiking just to get outside but we both weren’t feeling it so instead, we had more beer! We went over to Cato’s for lunch where they were having an adult Easter egg hunt. The egg that Nathan found got us a chocolate and a free beer. Heyooooo! Obviously because we chose the healthy option, we decided to take a post-lunch walk.. for gelato πŸ˜‰

Lush Gelato Cardamom Orange Zest

We split a cardamom orange zest and it was amazing. So much flavor on such a small spoon! Oh, and you know, in case you missed this on my Instagram feed yesterday..

What would a fun holiday be without a fun holiday recipe round up? I’m pretty sure you said “not fun” and I agree! And while I’ve never been big in partaking in the celebrations, I can certainly hop on board with the food- and drink-based excitement of it all.
