Top 5 Gifts for a Fitness Lover

I still can’t believe it’s already December. That, of course, means that we’re creeping closer and closer to figuring out what the heck to get everyone for the holidays! In an attempt to make some of your lives easier, I’m hoping that this list of my top 5 gives you a few ideas [for yourself, too!]

  1. New Running Gear
Athleta Stunner Tank Relay Tights Lorna Jane Pria Excel Jacket
A few of my favorite pieces lately include the Stunner Tank with a built-in medium-support bra, the Relay Tights with back zip pocket, drawstring, and mesh panels, and the Pria Excel Zip Through with reflectivity and super cute shoulder and back detail. There’s not much more that makes me want to go get a good workout in than new gear.
  2. Activity Tracker
    FitBit Flex
Obviously the trending fitness trackers are still as popular this year as ever. This is a great gift for everyone, from those that are already active, to those that are wanting to get started. A few options include: Fitbit, Polar Loop, & Jawbone UP24
  3. New Gym Bag
    Live 360 Core Bag
I’ve heard so many great things about the LiveWell360 Core Bag. With all of the smaller pockets within the main area to store items like glasses, jewelry, your phone, etc. it makes having a big bag easier to keep clean and organized. I also love the separate compartment for your shoes; putting dirty shoes gym shoes in with the rest of your things is the worst.
  4. Water Bottle
    Nathan Streamline Frosted Tritan Bottle
I love my Nathan water bottle [nothing to do with the name ;)] and it’s a often a gift that may slip your mind. A good water bottle is definitely a necessity.
  5. fitmob Passport
    Fitmob Passport
Having the ability to take a bunch of different fitness classes at all of your favorite studios all in one package is one of the best gifts I can think of! Fitmob Passport gets you unlimited access to top-rated classes at studios, bootcamps, and gyms (plus fitmob-exclusive classes) throughout San Francisco and Marin County, all for just $99/month. Sign up yourself today or give the gift of fitness to someone you love!
  6. BONUS!! Give the gift of personal training! If you know someone in the San Francisco Bay Area that is looking for a personal trainer, contact me to purchase a gift certificate. OR! If you know someone that is looking for online personal training, go ahead and purchase a 4-week personalized training program for them.

What I Ate Wednesday #108: National Chocolate Day

Have you entered my Athleta giveaway yet?

Did you know that yesterday was National Chocolate Day? I found out later in the day but luckily I happily celebrate everyday 😉 I swear, no one should have told me that dark chocolate is good for me.. that means I can have it by the handfuls, right? If you’re looking for ways to have a belated celebration, check out these delicious recipes!

Chocolate for every occasion!

[Breakfast]
Protein Egg White Oatmeal Almond Peanut Butter Coffee Califia Coconut Almond Milk
Same ol’, same ol’. I’ve been running dangerously low on my nut butters but I’m trying to use up as much as I can before I make more. Let me tell you, it’s rough! Haha I live such a hard life..

[Mid-Morning Snack]
I won a box of Banana Butterscotch Simply Protein bars and they’ve been a great little snack for when I have a quick break at work and know that I’ll need a little something to hold me over. At 130 calories, 8g fiber, 15g protein, and only 1g sugar, they do just that!

[Lunch]
Skirt Steak Avocado Trader Joes Cowboy Caviar Fuyu Persimmon
It’s nice having leftovers that aren’t chicken sometimes. A steak salad turns out to be pretty darn exciting! Especially with a sweet persimmon and some cowboy caviar from Trader Joes.

[Afternoon Snack]
Protein Chocolate Almond Butter Brownies
Like I said, I celebrate National Chocolate Day everyday! I’m loving having these brownies in the freezer; I just pop it in the microwave with a little coconut almond milk for 30 seconds and top with almond butter. It’s just so good and hits the chocolate spot!

[Dinner]
Half Baked Harvest Spicy BBQ Chickpeas Crispy Polenta Roasted Aparagus
Note to self: Nathan isn’t a fan of meatless Monday. Ha! At least I enjoyed dinner..

[Evening Snack]
Another apple. More almond butter. And more chocolate.. in the form of chocolate covered salted cashews. Try limiting your intake on those bad boys!

Fitness Friday: Working Out with fitmob + Athleta Giveaway!

There’s an awesome new fitness trend that is making the ability to take a bunch of classes at different gyms more readily accessible. As someone who has lived in an apartment complex with a gym for the past 3 years, I find it hard to want to pay for a gym but at the same time, feel like I’m missing out on some of the fantastic classes that are available for gym-goers. Enter fitmob.

I had the opportunity to attend one of their workouts, Weapons of Ass Reduction [love the name!], last week but unfortunately couldn’t work out the commute with my work schedule. I absolutely plan on giving this a go and checking out a bunch of studios in SF, along with some of their own workouts, in the near future. How could I pass on the opportunity to push my limits? Eeeexxactly!

And now for the giveaway!

Link Love #54

Big news! Yesterday I ran for the first time since I hurt my ankle. And not only did I run, but I did sprints! As much as I don’t like running, I don’t like being unable to do something even more.. ya feel me? I’ve also been crazy busy at Athleta since we got new inventory last week. If you haven’t taken a look in a while [or ever], definitely check out some of the new gear. Better yet, if you’re in the bay area, come visit me 🙂

What I Ate Wednesday #103: Mostly Recyclables

I’ve been slacking. But I’m blaming my phone. It’s time for a new phone for sure and I’ve been keeping it plugged in pretty much all the time. That said, it’s not in always in my hand to take quick pictures of my food so today’s WIAW is [almost] all about the recycled pictures. Thank goodness I eat so much of the same food all the time, right?

Monday was another flip day at Athleta so that meant another early morning. I didn’t get my workout in at the gym, but with all of the running around we do at the store and lugging boxes of new merchandise, I think it’s safe to say I did, in fact, get a workout in for the day!

<!–
[Pre-Workout]
Skoop Superfood Blueberry Cobbler Bites
I have a new bite recipe to share! It’ll be up later this week but for now, I’m trying not to eat the whole container. Often times, pre-workout snacks focus more on healthy fats and carbs to fuel the workout so when I’m making my bites, I try to stick with a coconut/peanut flour and peanut butter base. Makes for a delicious and creamy treat! –>

[Breakfast]
Protein Oatmeal Egg Macadamia Cashew Almond Nut Butter Coffee Orioles
Protein rocks! <– [Best commercial ever.] But for real, this is my favorite breakfast, workout or not. It has the perfect balance of protein, carbs, and fat for refueling and keeps me full for hours. It was just what I needed.. especially piping hot at 5:30 am.

[Morning Snack]

After all of my running around, I scarfed down a Salted Caramel ThinkThin bar. I’ve always loved ThinkThin but this new bar is by far my favorite. It’s basically like a little treat!

[Lunch]
Kale Spinach Avocado Panko Chicken Tomato Carrots Cucumber Corn Honey Mustard BBQ
Big ass salad, anyone? I pretty much throw the contents of my fridge on top of whatever greens we have and call it lunch. They mostly end up looking like this because wouldn’t it be the worst to have a salad without avocado?! I always make sure to have 4-6 oz of protein and some healthy fats with my 10 tons of veggies.

[Afternoon Snack]
Homemade Kombucha Shop
I’m so bad about drinking water when I’m at work. Because I’m running around, I can’t have my water bottle with me all the time. I got home and chugged some homemade kombucha that I’ve been rationing out until my next batch is ready. Thankfully, we’re all a go for the second fermentation and in just a few more days I’ll have another gallon’s worth!

[Dinner]
Franks Red Hot Buffalo Chicken Okra Broccoli
Something new! Nathan’s been requesting buffalo chicken and I figured roasted broccoli and okra would compliment nicely. I’d never made okra before but decided to give it a shot. I ended up eating pretty much the whole batch so I’d call it a success.. for me, at least.

[Evening Snack]
Peanut Butter Co Old Fashioned Chunky Fuji Apple
Carbs and fats [clearly in nut butter form] are easily my faves so I think it’s the perfect way to end the night. I’m really digging the chunky peanut butter right now too!

And even though this is from last night, not Monday, I thought I’d share anyway..
Homemade Vegan Peanut Butter Cup
because how can I keep my homemade peanut butter cups all to myself? 😉

Food for Thought

Are you a food creature of habit or do you switch it up regularly?

Five Things Friday {5/30}

Happy Friday! I hope you all had a good week. I’m glad it’s Friday [who isn’t?!]; we’re planning on heading to Prizefighter tonight after Nathan gets off of work. They’re known for their awesome cocktails.. how could we go wrong? I’ve also been in serious study mode recently. Talk about stress, I could use a cocktail!

  1. Last week I got the No Rush Hoodie at work. It’s seriously the most comfortable item of clothing I own. Get one immediately. And if you’re in the bay area, come visit me 😉

    Athleta No Rush Hoodie

They should totally have me model for the website.

  2. I’ve been making some pretty amazing salads this week [not to brag]. The peanut dressing is killer and paired with sweet potato is out of this world. I’m not exaggerating.
Kale Sweet Potato Peanut Sauce Avocado
    Tuna Peanut Sauce Avocado Nori

I know there are tons of recipes for peanut sauce on the web, but I thought I’d share mine too!
    Peanut Sauce
    Makes 1 serving
    – 1 tbsp peanut butter
    – 1 tsp lite soy sauce [can sub coconut or liquid aminos]
    – 1/2 tsp rice wine vinegar
    – 1/2 tbsp sriracha
    – 1/2 tsp sesame oil
    – Water [add slowly till you reach desired consistency]Yesterday I mixed a can of tuna and a small steamed sweet potato into the dressing before topping my salad. I was so excited to have it for lunch again today. Except then I ate the leftovers. Ha!
  3. Am I the only person that gets excited about finding new, fun almond milks?

Califia Farms Toasted Coconut Almond Milk

    Delicious. Especially in my coffee!

  4. Yesterday I woke up not especially excited to head to the gym. I had cardio and abs on the docket and the thought of running or hopping on the elliptical was just not for me. So I stayed back and went through the Tone It Up Ab Playlist + the new Bikini Abs routine. Holy cow, serious ab burn! It took about 35 minutes and my abs were on fire!
Tone It Up TIU Bikini Abs
  5. And since I keep talking about drinks, I figure I’ll end on one too. As part of a Sweat Pink campaign, I received Pure Lyft Energy Stir Sticks. They’re an energy product that has zero calories, zero taste, and contains as much caffeine as one tall coffee. It was perfect to add to my glass of water before I ran out the door for my 5 a.m. shift at work last week. Instead of chugging extra coffee, it was a great way to get a little extra pep in my step.

Welp, back to the books for me. Hope you have a great weekend!

Any big plans for the weekend?

Link Love #37

Yesterday was a first for me—Athleta got a ton of new product in so we had a “flip” where the entire store is rearranged and new product is incorporated into the displays. It’s not really anything I thought about before, but when I got into work at 5 a.m. yesterday, you bet I was thinking about it! It was kind of nuts but I also kind of enjoyed it. I was also finished with work by 10 a.m. so that’s a plus. Oh, and there’s some pretty cute new stuff that you should definitely check out [come see me!] The 4 a.m. wake-up call had me walking around like a zombie for pretty much the rest of the day, but I have to admit, it’s nice to really feel tired again.

Nathan also found out about a Target deal good through 5/24 for $10 off your $50 grocery purchase. We also had a $10 gift card so I was pretty excited to get $50 worth of groceries for $30. It’s the little things 😉 I also made him come with me to keep me on track ha! Anywho, it’s catch up time and as usual, there are some goodies.. enjoy!

What’s one of your favorite posts from last week?

Currently…

Currently I’m finishing up my breakfasta nice warm bowl of steel cut oats with coconut cashew and maple sunflower butters and a big cup-of-joe.

Steel Cut Oats Coconut Cashew Maple Sunflower Butter Coffee

I’m thinking it’s going to be a multiple big cup-of-joe kind of day. I just picked up my phone to take a sip of coffee.. yea.

I’m thinking I’m really glad I went to the gym this morning, even having not slept well, because I already feel like I’m reaping the rewards. And I know that I wouldn’t have wanted to move later in the day!

Workout

Currently I’m looking into when and where I can get my CPR/AED certification so I can take my CPT exam. Exciting. Nerve-wracking. Stress-inducing. Maybe part of the reason I’m not sleeping as well?

I’m also looking into all of the fun perks of my new job at Athleta. I’m only 2 shifts in right now, but I’m really liking it. [And I’m not just saying that because they might be reading!] Also, if you’re in the bay area, follow my store on Twitter.. they’re always posting about events and great in-store deals!

Currently I’m thinking about the anniversary trip. Man, it was fun. And surprisingly enough, we didn’t really overdo it this time. Maybe because wine country is in our backyard now and we can always go back for more!

Sparkling Wine Vintners Inn

I’m also thinking about how glad I am to have done my detox before retox week before the trip. This week is definitely about getting back to normal eats again, but in a different way. I mentioned last week that my body was appreciating the lack of grains and starchy vegetables, though by the end of the week, I’ll admit I was feeling tired. Maybe my body didn’t appreciate such a change.

I’m thinking that I’ve had a hell of a time really trying to figure out how to eat lately. That nice warm bowl of oats this morning? I was staying away from that last week, but maybe it’s something my body does want. Am I over-thinking? Yea, probably. It seems like every time I think I have it figured out, things change. I’m really just wanting someone to tell me how to eat. It shouldn’t be this hard, right?

Currently I’m thinking about how ridiculous it is that Northern California apartments don’t have air conditioning. I understand that it doesn’t get into the upper 80s/low 90s that often, but that’s just silly business. We’ve had our fans running constantly.

And I’m thinking about all of the fires in Southern California and hoping that everyone is staying safe.

Currently I’m counting the days till our trip home. I can’t wait to get my hands on this little nugget!

Jilly Bean

Check out those big blue eyes! Only 43 days and she’s mine 🙂

And currently I’m off for more coffee. That first cup didn’t last long!

Giveaway Winner!

Congrats to Kelsey S. Please email me with your shipping information and I’ll make sure you get your peanut butter soon!

Five Things Friday

Has a week ever passed you by and you’re completely baffled as to where it went and what you actually did? Yea, that’s where I am right now. But it’s Friday so that’s always a good thing. I do love my weekends!

  1. I’ve been really craving bread [thanks, Passover] so last night I made a loaf of Elana’s Paleo Bread. It didn’t make it the full 2 hours to cool, whoops! No worries though, it still sliced perfectly and was just as delicious as I remember. I really need to try more of her recipes!
    Elanas Pantry Paleo Bread
  2. Yesterday I went into Athleta.. always a mistake because I want everything! Especially this top. It’s next on my list.. good thing Nathan’s birthday is coming up soon. I get presents too, right?
    Athleta Workout Top
    Athleta Workout Top Back
  3. I made a crazy awesome salad for lunch yesterday. It was pretty much crazy awesome because of the sweet potato. I have a strange habit of only buying one sweet potato at a time.. probably because I could eat tons of sweet potato at a time so maybe I’m just subconsciously looking out for myself haha.
Spinach Salad Sweet Potato Quinoa Burger Avocado
  4. Marshalls is my favorite place to get snacks and fun flavored coffees. The other day I found some white cheddar Chia Pop. It’s not completely gone, but let’s just say it’s on its last leg. I have a popcorn problem. #fail
Lesser Evil Snacks White Cheddar Chia Pop
  5. When I got my new phone a little over a year ago, I got it from Best Buy and being accident-prone, decided to get the Geek Squad protection. A few weeks ago, my power button stopped working so I put that $10/month to use and traded in my phone.. for a refurbished phone. I’m now on my 4th phone and for a few days had to use a loaner phone. Fingers crossed that this phone works out but bottom line, I would not recommend Geek Squad [I just typed squash.. I have a squash problem too!] protection.

I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend and hitting up the farmers’ market tomorrow.

Food for Thought

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Five Things Friday

Is it just me or did this week fly? Not that anyone ever complains that it’s Friday.. besides, I have a fun weekend ahead!

  1. Tonight we’re headed into San Francisco to meet up with a few Fit Approach friends and head to a sketch comedy show. I’m pretty excited. It’s been a while since we’ve been to a comedy show but it’s right up our alley.
  2. Tomorrow I’m meeting up with Alyse [<– more Fit Approach love!] to go to a free VinBata class. It’s a combo of Vinyasa and Tabata.. I honestly have no idea what to expect but it should be fun!
    Workout Margaritas
    …..or wine?
  3. Speaking of workouts, I mentioned yesterday that I’ve been taking a bit slower at the gym lately and trying to figure out what my body actually wants instead of just doing a workout. Turns out, yesterday when I woke up I had no desire to go to the gym. I did some [really lame] yoga that I found on HuluPlus.. I say really lame because it was a little too slow for what I was looking for and there were commercials. How relaxing, right?
  4. I ended up getting really antsy as the day went on and decided to go for a GPS-less run around a nearby lake. Full disclosure: it was hard. For whatever reason, my asthma decided to act up and I was having trouble getting in some steady breathing, but I decided to feel it out and take my time. I ran about 3.25 miles and to my surprise, it was around a 7:50 pace! Woo! Plus, pretty flowers 😉
    Flowers California
  5. I’m pretty sure I completely forgot to mention the HIIT class I went to at Athleta last week taught by Erin, a trainer that I met at FitBloggin’ 2012 in Baltimore. She taught a kick ass [literally!] 6 am bootcamp and it was awesome so I knew to expect nothing less last week. She focused on sharing some moves that could be done anywhere, whether you’re at home, traveling, sitting at your kids baseball game, etc. I had a great time and it was so nice to catch up with her afterwards over a glass of wine [my only reason to go to P.F. Changs these days..] I also left with a new pair of capris that I pretty much love.
Power Fitness Athleta HIITIf you’re in the bay area, I highly recommend checking out some of her classes!
