Resting Up and Lobster Red

What a great weekend. Nathan and I were so looking forward to a weekend of exploring new things but also getting some serious R&R and  that’s exactly what we did.

I kicked off Friday with a killer workout that did me in for the rest of the weekend! Between all of the jumping lunges, jump squats, and weighted wall sits, my legs were done-zo. I spent the rest of the weekend waddling around.

Weighted Wall Sits

…and this was the easy part.

Friday night, we went to Westbrae Biergarten. It just opened up a few months ago and with the weather being so beautiful lately, we were psyched to find such a great outdoor spot.

Happy Hour Westbrae Beer Garden Berkeley

Who gets wine at a beer garden?!

We grabbed a bite to eat there and then headed around the corner for some ice cream. The flavor choice after tasting a few was overwhelmingly unanimous.. thai coconut sorbet it is!

Chocolatier Blue Patisserie Thai Coconut Sorbet

This was the longest I was allowed to hold the cone.

Saturday we drove down to Carmel. We picked up some lunch at Bruno’s for a little beach picnic and then completely chillaxed.

Carmel Beach Picnic Blue Diamond

Salads galore!

Carmel Beach Savasana

I call this active rest day.. savasana is my favorite post, after all.

A lesson we’ve yet to learn is that sunscreen is always your friend, even when it’s a little cool and foggy. I’m legitimately as red as a lobster and my skin hurtsss! But sunburn means you deserve In N Out on the way home, right?

In N Out Burger

Just gimme all your fries.

I don’t even like burgers.. this was Nathan’s, but I definitely helped out on those fries!

Sunday, between my sore legs and my crazy sunburn, I opted for another rest day. I made some delicious plantain protein bread

Lifting Revolution

..

Plantain Protein Bread

I have a feeling these will all be slathered with nut butters.

..we took a nice walk to the grocery store, and had an amazing dinner at Haven. We bought a Travelzoo deal months ago for dinner and never got around to using it. Until it was just about expired! I don’t know why we waited so long!

Haven Oakland Melon Soup

Chilled melon soup with coconut milk, lemon verbena ice, and frozen melon chunks.

Haven Oakland Tomato Salad

Tomato salad with smoked goat cheese, basil, and bagel crumb.

Haven Oakland Salmon Spaetzle Cabbage

My salmon with cabbage, turnips, spaetzel, and hot mustard.

Haven Oakland Flat Iron Steak Black Garlic Crushed Potatoes

Nathan’s flat iron steak with crushed potato, broccoli, and black garlic puree.

Haven Oakland Yellow Corn Budino Toasted Husk Ice Cream

Yellow corn budino with cornbread, blackberry jam, and toasted husk ice cream.

Everything was so well executed and very flavorful but the chilled melon soup stole the meal. The combination of the melon and coconut was unlike anything we’ve had before. The smoked goat cheese with the tomatoes and bagel crumbs mimicked the taste of smoked salmon which was unexpected and delicious. My salmon was perfectly cooked and cabbage, spaetzle, and radish added some great textures to the dish. My one comment is I felt like the mustard overpowered the salmon. I ended up scraping most of it off so I still got some of the flavor and I loved every bite.

The crushed potatoes and black garlic in Nathan’s dish were to die for. So chock full of flavor and the potatoes were creamy, but still had great texture, unlike regular mashed potatoes. And finally, the corn budino was again, unlike anything we’ve had before. It was corn 4 ways and the toasted husk ice cream was the winning component of the dish. Overall, I’d go back in a heartbeat.. if we got another deal. It’s a bit on the pricey side but the freshness, flavors, and execution were wonderful.

Like I said, a wonderful weekend. And glad to get back into meal routine again 😉

Food for Thought

What were your fun plans over the weekend?

Five Things Friday

Whoa, late post here but I just wanted to drop in, say hi, and give you all a quick update 🙂

  1. Yesterday I made yet another variation on the pancakes! Say hello to Apple Pie. It was a good call.
Apple Pie Coconut Almond Flour Pancakes

    Apple Pie Pancakes

    Ingredients
    – 3 tbsp coconut flour
    – 2 tbsp almond flour
    – 1/4 tsp baking powder
    – 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
    – 1 tsp cinnamon or apple pie spice
    – 16 drops of liquid stevia
    – Pinch of salt
    – 7 egg whites
    – 1/4 – 1/2 cup water

For my layers/topping, I mixed 1 tbsp peanut flour with 2 tbsp applesauce, 4 drops stevia, and water. I also used 1/2 shredded apple in between and on top. And the ultimate was topping it with the best apple quinoa granola from Michele’s.

  2. This morning, my company had a little retreat and provided brunch. I wasn’t sure what to expect so, as always, I came prepared with some bars in my bag but I was more than pleasantly surprised to see the catering food truck from The Food Market. Nathan and I had been there once for dinner but I’ve been wanting to go for brunch since I saw their killer menu. It did not disappoint!

The Food Market Brunch Baltimore Maryland MD

I had to try a little bit of everything!

  3. Yesterday Alysia shared a metabolism experiment that she tested. This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while now but reading her thoughts on this convinced me! Tomorrow is the big day and I’ll be sure to report back.
  4. Speaking of which, that means tomorrow is my rest day and to say I’m pysched would be an understatement! My workouts definitely got the best of me this week and I’m looking forward to resting up and feeling refreshed for next week!

I can’t move my arms today.. thanks Tina 😉

  5. I can’t believe it’s already October 25th! Where has the time gone?! Halloween is next week and I’m wrapping up my costume for work. It isn’t anything crazy but it’s a fun day at work every year!

Food for Thought

Have you ever tried a metabolism experiment like this?

Do you ever have weeks that your workouts seem extra tough?

Do you have a Halloween costume picked out yet?

Fitness Friday: Summer Bootcamp

Holy cow, I can’t believe the 8 weeks have already passed for Best Body Bootcamp! I’m certainly not new to the program at this point so I knew what I was getting myself into when I signed up. This time around, however, I had some different goals. For my first two rounds, I was getting ready for the wedding; with this round, I was getting back into shape from the honeymoon! 😉

In all seriousness, I’m a planner; I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I absolutely love having a workout schedule already planned out for me. There is no thinking involved! And if I’m waking up before the clock strikes 6, you can bet I appreciate any and all help in the thinking department. I have, without a doubt, noticed some changes over the past 8 weeks.

And good gravy, bootcamp gives you a hell of a burn!

Workout burn on the left. After burn on the right. 83%!!

I’ve also learned a few things during during the 8-week program.

  • Rest days are important! Your muscles need a break and when you give that to them, they repair and are stronger for future workouts.
  • I’m a weights girl. I would 100% rather do a strength training workout with heavy weights than do a body weight workout.
  • While it’s nice to have set workouts, it’s equally as nice to be able to swap things around and make the workouts work for you.
  • Having a community of people participating in the same program and acting as a support group is really motivating. [Ok, I already knew this, but it’s a great reminder!]
  • Upper body workouts are my jam.

If you’re at all considering Best Body Bootcamp, I highly recommend it. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, there are adjustments to all of the moves to make them easier or harder and you can always get a challenging workout! Registration for the fall session begins August 19th and goes through September 6th. The programs starts September 9th, so mark your calendars and don’t forget to register!

Long Weekends and Workouts

Happy Saturday! Have you entered my Chobani giveaway yet? I mean really, who wouldn’t want a free case of Greek yogurt?!

I hope you had a great 4th of July and got to see some awesome fireworks. Nathan and I met up with some friends at Gordon Biersch for dinner and drinks by the water and were able to watch the fireworks from our seats at the restaurant. Yes, it may have been through some trees, but they are city trees so they’re little 🙂

Gordon Biersch Cashew Chicken Salad

Cashew Chicken Salad

I had the day off yesterday so I took that time to sleep in [all the way until 8:30!], get in an awesome workout, and run some very important errands.

Manicure Haircut About Faces Day Spa

I was way past due to get my nails done and for a haircut! Really, it was more of a chopping.. a little shorter than I expected and prefer, but I’ll get used to it. And it’ll grow. I think I’ll need to invest in some wider headbands though because there is no way I’m going to be able to put my hair back for workouts! Any recommendations are welcome 🙂

And speaking of workouts, bootcamp this week was rough! Part of what I love about it is having the ability to scale the workouts to your own level. This week, two of the workouts concentrated on heavier weights and less reps and I really took advantage of that. My hands were red, my arms and legs were shaking, and it hurt so good. These are the workouts that give you real results [and I’m clearly proud of that.. #noshame].

Best Body Bootcamp Tina Reale

These are the workouts that helped me to get wedding ready and they’re also the workouts that keep me going back for more. The constant changes in routine and moves keep you and your muscles guessing. It also doesn’t hurt that I don’t have to think about what kind of workout I want to do each day! And I’m definitely appreciating my rest day today.

It’s so nice to still have a full weekend ahead of me. We got early and went to breakfast at one of our favorite spots right down the street, Spoons.

Spoons Cafe Federal Hill Baltimore Maryland MD Break-ing-fast Burrito

Break-ing-fast Burrito with egg whites, black bean chili, spinach, and salsa verde

We went there the day before the wedding for a little breakfast escape. It’s one of the only places where I don’t get eggs benedict for breakfast. Their homemade black bean chili has a nice kick that has just the right amount of spice. I totally converted Nathan too.. he got the same breakfast with added chorizo. Good thing we’re so different, right?

I’m sure we’ll be running around the rest of the day today and tomorrow morning we’ll be up early again to grab some fresh fruits and veggies from the farmers’ market. My fave! Enjoy your weekend!

Food for Thought

What kind of workouts are your favorite? Are you a gym rat or do you prefer running or playing sports?

Do you have any fun plans this weekend?

Holy Week 7!

Remember wayyy back at week 1 when I mentioned rumors of burpees? Yea. I found em. Welcome to week 7 where we are not. Messing. Around.

Power training is the name of the game for the final 2 weeks of bootcamp. I absolutely do not hesitate to admit that these workouts are the most difficult of the entire 8 weeks, but they’ve also been my favorite and most rewarding.

Week 7 Thoughts

You really don’t realize how so many simple movements can add up. Ever tried an Alligator Walk? I didn’t think it looked that bad. And it didn’t feel that bad either for the first few steps. But by the end of 4 sets my body was burning! Another move to try is the bench popover. I was definitely intimidated seeing the short clip of this but I’m in love. It’s my new favorite move! Maybe I’m crazy, but I think it’s fun 🙂

And while I was having fun mid-week, when I got to Friday’s 3-move workout, I knew I was in for it. Three moves? No problem, right? How about when that includes 180 burpees? Definitely found the burpees. It was rough but I got one hell of a burn that day and somehow still left the gym with a smile. [Go figure!]

I have to admit, I’m really looking forward to my workouts this week and even more so, finishing bootcamp strong! It doesn’t get much better than this..

Bootcamp is Almost Over?!

There are only 2 weeks left in Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp. I can’t believe it! The first 6 weeks have flown by and I feel like I’ve accomplished so much already.

The workouts over these past 2 weeks have been either pyramid sets or high intensity circuit training. I definitely am more a fan of the pyramids. While I enjoyed the timed workouts in weeks 3 and 4, hitting a certain number of reps and sets is more my speed.

Weeks 5 & 6 Thoughts

As I mentioned in week 1, I’ve been doing this bootcamp routine along with the Love Your Body Challenge which ended on Valentine’s Day. Between the schedules of both routines, I’ve been able to really challenge myself with new workouts and push myself further. I’d have to say my biggest accomplishment thus far has been running a 10K! Before a few weeks ago, my longest run was just over 4 miles but now I’m confident that I can keep upping my mileage. Maybe there’s a half marathon in my future?

Killer. Loved it. Like I said, the pyramid workouts were my favorite; they really pushed me out of my weight comfort zone and into pressing up to 30 lb dumbells! And somehow, over 8000 calories burned later, at the end of the weekend I’m actually feeling refreshed and ready to go again! These last 2 weeks are the time to really kick it into high gear and I’m looking forward to mixing it up again. My muscles are so confused.. that’s definitely a good thing!

Favorite Meal of the Week

Valentine’s Day is always a day for Nathan and I to have a great dinner at home. I know I posted this fun Valentine’s date idea, but in reality, with the big day being a Thursday, that just wasn’t going to happen during the week.

Instead, we made shawarma-spiced lamb chops, roasted asparagus, Israeli salad [cucumber, tomato, onion, dill, lemon, & olive oil], and tahina sauce. I also picked up some fresh naan, lemon rice, and a platter of Mediterranean appetizers complete with falafel, baba ghanoush, stuffed grape leaves, and more!

Finally, for dessert, I was inspired by a Tone It Up recipe and made my own twist on their dark chocolate strawberry cups. Expect to see it on the blog soon 🙂

Bootcamp: The Midway Point

When I hit week 2 I thought 8 weeks might feel like a long time. Now that I’m at week 5, I can’t believe we’re already half way through!

If you recall from week 1, I took the fitness challenge which is to be repeated at the half way point as well as the end.

Week 4

Overall, I’m pleased with my challenge results. My wall sit time increased by over 30 seconds [holy shaky legs!], I did 10 more push ups, and I cut 14 seconds off of my fastest mile! As far as my plank goes, I can definitely go longer, so I’ll be revisiting that soon. And burpees? Well.. they’re burpees. And they suck. But I’m hoping for at least 1 more by the end of bootcamp!

Week 4 Thoughts

I can’t lie, week 4 was tough. I don’t know if the workouts are catching up to my and my body was just more tired, or if it was just an off week. I definitely pushed myself and kept up the intensity and it’s showing. Not only did I improve on almost all pieces of the fitness challenge, I also was able to go through more sets in my timed workouts and I’ve also lost a total of 4″! It’s nice to see all of the hard work that I’m putting actually paying off. It is absolutely encouraging me to keep pushing through the next 4 weeks!

Favorite Meal of the Week

Last Thursday was the 1 year anniversary of Nathan proposing to me so of course, we had to go out to dinner! This is just a sneak peak as I’ll be recapping the whole dinner on Wednesday, but I had the seared mahi mahi with capers & raisins, cauliflower puree, and almond bubbles for my entree. It was light, a little buttery, and the fish had the perfect crust. It was definitely a winner!

As week 3 of bootcamp comes to a close, I’m pleased to say I have fully taken a beating over the course of the week.

We really turned up the heat with some new workouts and push (and pulled!) our muscles in new ways. Focusing on strength training with super sets is how I am most accustomed so while I enjoyed the layout of the workouts, my muscles were screaming!

Tina Reale Best Body Bootcamp Week 3 Tone It Up TIU Love Your Body Challenge

This week of workouts, between bootcamp and the Love Your Body Challenge, really kicked my butt. I finished the week with an almost 3,900 calorie deficit. HOLY COW!

Like I said, I loved the super sets, but we also focused on timed workouts which are relatively new to me. I found myself pushing myself a bit harder through some of the timed circuits because I knew that I could do just a little bit more! As I noticed after week 2, I could crank through the workouts a bit faster since I already knew what was coming. I’m looking forward to cranking through the same workouts again with a bit more speed.

Favorite [At Home] Meal of the Week

As featured in my What I Ate Wednesday post, I fully took advantage of Nathan having the day off on Monday. He made mongolian beef with stir-fry veggies and it was fabulous!

Week 2 of Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp is complete and I’m alive! Sore. But alive.

Monday I hit the ground running and pushed through my first workouts from both Tina and Tone It Up.

It was tough, but knowing what to expect out of the workouts helped me crank em out a little quicker than last week. And I already found that I could increase my weights for some of the exercises! That really makes me look forward to revisiting the fitness challenge after week 4!

Week 2 Thoughts

Once again, my motto of less thinking, more moving rings true. Some of the moves got easier and I was able to increase weight. Others [like that darn scorpion!] are still putting me to shame. I’m also pleased to say that this weeks’ workouts have pushed me over my 100 miles since January 1! The newest goal? I’m going to hit 200 miles by Valentines Day. Might as well double it, right? 😉

Workouts for weeks 3 and 4 have been sent out and they look grueling but I’m up for the challenge and I’m looking forward to changing it up again.

Favorite Meals of the Week

It’s a toss up! Nathan made a delicious fajita spiced skirt steak which I made into a huge kale salad. But tied was a salad from Kooper’s Tavern, a local Baltimore bar. This salad was not only topped with beets and roasted squash [some of my faves], but also everything bagel seasoning crusted tuna. Everything bagel seasoning crusted. It’s revolutionary.

How have you pushed yourself this past week?

Best Butt-Kicking Bootcamp

This has been one crazy week! I mentioned on Wednesday that this week has been all about getting back into my routine which has included continuing with Tone It Up’s Love Your Body Challenge along with starting Tina’s Best Body Bootcamp. I knew that taking on both challenges at the same time would be, well.. challenging, and it has certainly proved to be just that! But I’m totally up for it!

Tina Reale Best Body BootcampTone It Up TIU Love Your Body Challenge
I made the decision to sign up for Tina’s Bootcamp because I felt like I was needing a kick in the butt and that’s exactly what it has done for me. I was so excited to get the first 2 weeks of workouts in my inbox and get my schedule together. I noticed that it fit perfectly into my schedule; strength and cardio Monday, Wednesday, Friday; cardio Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday; and rest day on Sunday. Let’s do this!

Tina Reale Best Body Bootcamp Fitness Challenge

Bootcamp started with a fitness test which will be repeated after 4 weeks and then again at the end of the 8 week program to track progress. I already can’t wait to check back in after 4 weeks and see how I’ve improved! And after just one week in, I know there will be improvement!

Week 1 Thoughts

Tina’s workouts are great! Though I do hear rumors of plenty of burpees.. we’ll see how I feel about her workouts then! 😉

The moves are nothing too far out of the ordinary for me, but throwing in a few new moves [like the scorpion.. whew!!] and just the simple fact of having everything planned out for me makes it that much better. Less thinking, more moving. And that’s exactly what I did.

P.S. I love the fact that some of the linked videos on Tina’s workouts are of my TIU trainer, Katrina!

Tina Reale Best Body Bootcamp Week 1 Tone It Up TIU Love Your Body Challenge

I pushed my weights, I pushed my cardio, and I feel good! Not to mention, part of the Love Your Body Challenge is 100 miles of cardio from January 1 until Valentine’s Day [#100forVDay]; these two challenges have pushed me to 70% complete and it’s only January 12th!

This week has been awesome and I’m so looking forward to the next 7. Seeing my progress from 6 days worth of work makes me want to push even harder next week! After a rest day tomorrow, of course.

Let’s do this!

Oh, and in case you missed some tasty morsels, here’s my favorite dinner of the week; a (crazy) stuffed sweet potato! My friend pointed out that it looks like a heart.. obviously for the Love Your Body challenge 😉
